Flower Mobile

This may seem like an odd blog for February 21.  Especially since it’s snowing like crazy with 30 mph gusty winds here.  But, if Mother Nature won’t give me Spring, I’ll make my own.

Again, this is just a jumping stone for you to modify in any way that will work with your family.

What you Need:

Styrofoam ring or circle cut from cardboard.

Craft paper in bright colors or patters

Scissors

String

Glue

Project needs

Project needs

1.  If using a Styrofoam ring, cover it with tissue paper.  I’ve also used leftover goodie bags, decorated plastic wrap with sticker.  Use your imagination with what’s handy.

2.  Make flowers. The number will depend on the size and how many you want.

            - you can decorate the flowers with glitter or paints.

3.  Attach string to flowers and base.  Hang at various lengths.

4.  For the best results with hanging.  Attach string after all the flowers are in place.

ABC & 123 book

This project is a great learning tool as well as inexpensive.  Kids love it because they get to cut and glue.

Materials:

Spiral notebook – 25 or 50 pages depending if you’re going to do both the alphabet and numbers.

Magazines – old ones from the library or recycled

Scissors & Glue

Pencil

Construction paper – Stickers – Markers (optional)

Instructions:

1.  This step is optional.  We always enjoyed making a cover for our books.  To make the cover glue the construction paper over the front of the spiral notebook.  The child can decorate it with the stickers or the markers.

2.  We also made a title page on the first page.  Something like ‘Anna’s ABC’s and 123’s.  Designed and written by Anna Smith.’  If your child is just learning to write then write the title out on a separate piece of paper so they can copy it on to the title page.

3.  How the actual book is done will depend on your child’s age.

a. If they are just starting to recognize their letters and numbers.  Go through the magazine and have them cut out the ‘a’s.  Then glue them on the ‘A’ page.  The child can practice writing some ‘a’ on these pages as well.

b. For those that are learning to sound out objects.  Go through the magazine and cut out pictures that start with the letter that you’re working on.  When my children were just beginning to sound things out, I would tell them that there were two objects on this page that start with a G.  As their reading skill grew they need less of my help.  I would also have them write ten uppercase and ten lowercase of each letter on the page.

c. For the number pages; simply have them cut out the correct number of objects to glue on the page.

4.  I stored all the supplies in an old shoe box so when we wanted to work on our book, I simply retrieved the box.

This is a great project to reinforce or teach the alphabet with.  It’s fun and the kids are proud of their completed books.
